Planning a celebration and wondering when to lock in the cake? It is one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is simple: the earlier you reach out, the more likely you are to get the exact cake you are imagining. Unlike a supermarket cake sitting ready on a shelf, a custom cake is designed and baked to order, one at a time, just for your occasion. That means the calendar matters. Popular dates fill quickly, and the finest details, the ones that make a cake truly yours, need a little room to come together. Giving your baker enough notice is the single easiest thing you can do to make sure your celebration is crowned with the cake you pictured.

How much lead time you really need

For most custom cakes, a comfortable window is somewhere between two and four weeks ahead. That stretch of time gives you room to talk through the design, choose your flavours, settle on a size, and mention any dietary needs, all without feeling rushed, and it secures your date before someone else claims it. If your celebration is a birthday or a smaller, more straightforward design, you can often work with a shorter window of one to two weeks, and sometimes even less. The thing to keep in mind is that weekends book up fastest, so if your date falls on a Saturday or lands near a holiday, reaching out sooner is always the safer choice. There is no downside to booking early, only the peace of mind that your cake is spoken for.

When your cake needs extra time

Some cakes simply ask for more notice, and weddings sit at the top of that list. A wedding cake is rarely just a cake; it is tiers, structure, a tasting, and careful coordination around your date and venue, so we recommend booking two to three months ahead, and earlier still if your wedding falls in the busy stretch from late spring through summer. The same logic applies to any elaborate or sculpted design. Hand-painted details, unusual shapes, and intricate themed work all take extra planning and build time, so if your heart is set on something ambitious, give it at least two to three weeks and ideally more. Dietary cakes deserve a mention here too. Eggless, keto, nut-free, and lactose-free cakes are all absolutely possible, and a little extra notice simply ensures the right ingredients are on hand and the recipe is prepared with the care your needs deserve.

Booking during busy seasons, and ordering last minute

Certain times of year fill up faster than others. The December holidays, Mother’s Day, graduation season, and the summer wedding months all bring a rush of orders, and during those weeks the calendar tightens quickly. If your celebration lands in one of those periods, treat it as a reason to reach out even earlier than you normally would. That said, life does not always allow for careful planning, and sometimes a beautiful cake is needed on short notice. Last-minute orders are occasionally possible depending on the design and how the week is shaping up, though your choices will be more limited and availability can never be guaranteed. If your date is close, do not assume the answer is no. It is always worth asking, because the worst we can say is that we are fully booked, and often we can find a way to help. When in doubt, ask early: booking ahead never hurts, and it gives you the very best chance of the cake you are dreaming of, made with care and ready for your day.
